Uzbekistan’s wine history dates back over 2000 years and has been influenced from its presence on the Silk Road, a flourishing Persian influence, declining consumption under Islamic prohibitions and under Russian rule becoming a major Soviet sweet wine producer. Industrial production only began at the end of the 19th century under the Russian control. Uzbekistan is re-establishing itself as a producer of table wine.
