Uruguay

When we visited Uruguay, we were initially surprised to learn that Uruguay is South America’s fourth largest wine producer, and is globally recognised for producing refined, tannic red wines from its signature grape Tannat. With a maritime climate similar to Bordeaux, it produces elegant, high-acid wines primarily focusing on red blends, and increasingly, white varieties like Alberino. The industry is dominated by small, family-run wine estates.

We spent time strolling the charming UNESCO listed Colonia del Sacramento, with its cobblestone streets in 2016, and sitting having lunch overlooking the blue waters of the Rio de la Plata. (2016)
