This trip to Tasmania we decided to focus on the north of the island which is the undisputed leader in Australian sparkling wines made in the traditional method and probably one of the best regions in the world for sparkling wines apart from Champagne and the Franciacorta region of Italy.
During our visit we visited:
- Jansz (www.jansz.com.au) Jansz has been devoted to making sparkling wine since 1986.
- Joseph Chromy (www.josephchromy.com.au) Now in commercial hands the winery has interesting experiences including an Art of Sparkling class where you blend your own sparkling wine.
- Bellebonne at Evenfall Winery (www.bellebonne.wine) Natalie Fryar’s Bellebonne was awarded the Halliday Best sparkling Rose in 2022 and Tyson Stelzer’s Sparkling of the year in 2025 for their Blanc de Blanc. One of the standouts of Australian sparkling wine.
- House of Arras (www.houseofarras.com.au) The standout sparkling wines in our view came from the House of Arras. Truly world class wines. The Sparkling Wine Masterclass is worth doing. Bookings are essential.
- Sinapius (www.sinapius.com.au) A standout winery that makes a range of very interesting quality wines including Gruner Veltliner, Ribolla Gialla, Gamay and a field blend wine called Clem composed of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Gruner Veltliner and Chardonnay Musque.
- Holm Oak (www.holmoakvineyards.com.au) We undertook the sensory tour of the garden with chief winemaker Bec Duffy who is one of the most knowledgeable winemakers we have encountered. A wonderful experience with quality wines at good price points.
- Small Wonder Vineyard (www.smallwonderwines.com.au) A small family-owned vineyard with wonderful views.
- Tamar Ridge & Pirie (www.tamarridge.com.au) Picturesque views from the cellar door and a range of experiences.
Northern Tasmania is certainly worth a visit.
