Malta

Located in Ta’ Qali, near Mdina, on the former site of Britain’s WWII airfield stands the current Meridiana Wine Estate (Meridiana.com.mt). When the vineyard was being established it required bomb removal prior to planting. Chardonnay and Merlot are the predominant varieties. Meridiana do a popular dry white called Fenici which is a blend of Chardonnay, Viognier and Vermentino grapes. The Meridiana Wine Estate produces approximately 140,000 bottles per year, and their focus is to “produce world class wines of Maltese Character”.

Another vineyard that may be of interest is Delicatos, that was established in 1907 and have five classified DOC wines.

If you manage to visit Malta, we would highly recommend staying in Mdina, in the old walled city, it is literally like taking a step back in time. A particularly special time is at the end of the day or early in the morning before the invasion of the day-trippers.

If time allows, then the boat trip to the nearby island of Gozo, is a must. Ta’ Meno is a local vineyard you may want to consider investigating. (2023)
