Bhutan

Whilst we were in the beautiful, ‘happy’ country of Bhutan we stayed at The Six Senses Hotel in both Paro and Thimpu, where we were provided with the opportunity to try some local Bhutan wine. The wine industry in Bhutan is very young, as The Bhutan Wine Company only initiated commercial viticulture in 2019, and they now market their wine under the ‘Ser Kem’ label.  In Bhutan, Ser Kem (pronounced “Saire-Chem”) is a term that represents “an offering to the Gods”. When we visited in October 2025, the industry had grown to nine vineyards cultivating Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir with some of the vineyards planted at altitudes of 9,150 feet. It will be really interesting to be able to observe this fledgling wine industry develop further over the coming years. (2025)
